Special-Needs-Millennium awards holder, Julie Lankester, undertook a research study in the summer of 2001 called Padded Budgies (long story!). This study explored the process of thinking and learning by examining recent research into the workings of the brain and the importance of creating the right state for learning. She also considered the emotional association of effective learning. One issue addressed was what does a student look for in a great teacher? She asked children across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 what quality they wanted in a teacher more than any other.

Turn back the clock and ask yourself now, what did you love about being with your favourite teacher? What was it about her that made you want to get to her lesson or stay in her classroom after the bell had gone?

When I ask a room full of teachers this question, I always receive lots of heartfelt replies. Many get close, but few hit the nail on the head. So let’s list some of the qualities that may be dancing in your head right now:
